Productivity For Unorganised People

Tips and tools to help you slay your day

If you’re anything like me, you’re not going to have a load of neatly constructed charts and lists labelled and filed away. You’re certainly not going to have a bullet journal (even though you may have started one.) You may have a stack of pretty notebooks.. but only ever fill the first few pages and even then, they may have been torn out. Highlighters, Post-its and decorative chalkboards.. yeah you have them but they’re just part of your inevitable clutter.. and yes.. there’s plenty of that. So if any of that resonates, you and I have something in common.. we’re unorganised!

We’re not going to change, even though we try, so here are some ways in which I’ve learnt to embrace it but get sh*t done…

1. Boss it out or break it down

You have two choices in which to tackle the task at hand dear unorganised one… to smash it out or to break it down into smaller tasks over a period of time. Since you’re reading this, I’m going to assume that de-cluttering is a perpetual task on your list of “to-do’s.” Either take a day to get it done or conquer one drawer or space at a time. The latter may not bring about instant gratification as it does with the former, but it doesn’t require your full dedication, attention and demand for your precious time. Over time, you will see the results of your hard work paying off. However, sometimes you just need to dive in and get it done. Decide which way is the best way to overcome your hurdles.

2. Tell your tribe

Sometimes, I find it helpful to tell others my plans. They may help to encourage and motivate you but also the act of actually telling people can solicit results. If you’ve put it out in to the world what you hope to achieve, it can be a real psychological push to get it done.

3. The early bird really does get the worm

Despite being more of a stretch to make myself do things in the morning, once I get started, I’m usually on a roll. I find myself being most productive and work minded in the morning but that may be different for you. Discover your productive hours and Utilise them!

5. Get Inspired

Do the things that give you a feeling of excitement and accomplishment. If you have an urge.. take it! Listen to music that makes you feel good, watch movies or TV shows with a bad-ass leading lady, read and research your sh*t online.. do anything to kick your ass into high gear!

7. Apps and Tech

Technology is going to be your BFF in productivity but only if you utilise it.

  • Once you’ve discovered your favourite productivity apps.. sync them up with all the tech you use. Make sure that handy list tool you use on your phone is also signed in to the same account on your laptop and iPad or whatever it is you use. A couple of good apps to try are Todoist, Evernote, Wunderlist and DayOne.
  • Another easy step is organising your apps so that the helpful ones are on the front page or even in your carousel so that you can’t ignore them.
  • You should be using multiple email addresses in order to not clog up your inbox. I have an email account for work and important contacts and another for subscriptions and online accounts.
  • This may not be breaking news, but I’ve recently discovered the joys of siri and reminders. Setting reminders to myself in certain locations, at certain times on certain days… GOLD.
  • Digital journaling. Use at your leisure.. or don’t. I use Notability.. kind of.

8. Let’s get physical

Notebooks. We love them. But no, we don’t have one for every different subject matter in our lives and no we don’t write in them every morning and night and go over our notes to check off to-do’s but YES we’re going to buy them anyway. My tip? Don’t TRY. We’ve already established that we’re unorganised that’s just who we are to the core of our beings. Embrace that and just fill your notebooks with whatever the F you want.. one page could be a 5 year plan and the next a grocery list. Even if you never come back to that page.. get it out! Just write it down, set your intentions and release it to the world.

Forget the journal, get yourself a calendar or wall chart and hang it where you can access it and see it easily.

Pinboards, pegboards, chalkboards and dry erase boards? We probably own one or multiple with good intentions.. My light board still says “happy halloween.” Screw it, write a reminder if you can/feel like it. Use them to look cute instead.

9. Make that call, write that email, declutter.

Vision Board

In 2018 I want to begin to remember thinking about the power of positive thinking and meaningful manifesting.

It can take a great effort to realise your thoughts are not in line with your goals and desires and to purposefully shift them in to a receiving state of mind. I do personally believe that your reality is a product of your own mind and that thoughts and feelings can help to shape the way in which we live our lives.

I realise now that I had been blindly ignoring this lesson I had learnt and had been stuck in a rut of negative thoughts for a while so the first step to kick starting a new school of thought was initially DECIDING TO MAKE A CHANGE and then… a vision board!

Putting up pictures of dreams, desires and happy memories in a place you can see every day is a great tool to manifesting the life you want. Seeing the things that make you happy can help to raise your mood and allow you to see a clear path to achieving your goals. Find pictures of the things you want, that make you feel good or that symbolise something to you.

For my own vision board, I found this piece of garden mesh in a garden centre, hung it on my wall and pinned up my pictures with mini pegs. I hung some dried out roses with white string that I tied to the mesh for a decorative, pretty touch too! I’ve still got plenty of space to fill and it’s still definitely a work in progress!

We can get so bogged down in indulging in what we THINK makes us feel good but in reality makes us feel low and unproductive. There is no harm in laying in bed watching Netflix every so often but doing it at every chance you get is no good for anyone. One thing I will endeavour to do in 2018 is doing the things that make me feel accomplished and excited more often and try to make it more special and enjoyable when I am just doing nothing at all!
